UNITING KNOWLEDGE WITH NATURE

Jana Zebian

Based on the analysis of Giuseppe Terragni’s Asilo Infantile Sant’Elia, this project focusses on Terragni’s innovative use of classical elements to create unique experiences specially the manipulation of the base, roof, mass versus void, and axiality of the building. These characteristics inspired the axial layout of the different school units leading to the layering of the diverse spaces, and the creation of in between transitional spaces. The different units are assembled around a central courtyard which permits a better control of the school limits. The functions are distinguished by the accessibility of the units resulting from the manipulation of the bases heights. The vertical elements are articulated to allow enough light inside the classrooms while minimizing heat. The overall arrangements of units provoke an indirect connection to nature through transitional spaces dedicated for services.
