The first project attributes another function to enclosed cornered passages as they can provide support and directionality to someone walking through. A home care worker to a disabled senior with visual impairment occupy the space; this character has claustrophobia. She leans towards open spaces through the enclosed controlling passage that acts as both a parasitic element that triggers fear but also support between the levels.
A deep void is formed due to an earth fissure over which the house now sits. The site is not a safe space and needs to be kept extremely dry. The rigid thick structure of the rocks envelops and controls the space. The emptiness created enhances echo throughout the house and creates a comforting atmosphere of enclosure. The stairs act as a connector while creating a dreading experience. Comfort is found within the steady spaces, keeping a visual connection with the other side.
