THE UNEXPECTED WORKPLACE: AN EXERCISE IN ADAPTIVE REUSE.
The semester was dedicated to the design of a workplace for an NGO whose area of intervention includes culture and art practices. For this purpose, the studio took as a site of intervention, a house with a historical background, located in the old city in Tripoli. through the methodical investigating of the scope of the possible interventions, varying from a “clean slate” approach to a rigorous historical reconstitution, students learned to make choices on what to keep and what to erase, what to selectively add or remove, in accord with the nature of the space, the program requirements and their own intent. Simultaneously, a reflection on the nature of the workplace was conducted, investigating the possible interrelations of the users within the space.
