UPCYCLING CENTER: THE CONNECTING AXIS

pamela nassar

Located along the Abu Ali River, the project is an Upcycling Center – as well as an Educational Center for children, a Library, and a Market – that aims to fill the gap evident socially, economically, and physically on an urban scale. Socially and economically, as observed with the river pollution, lack of jobs, and child labor. Physically, due to the north-western area’s disconnection from the market axis and main movement within the city. Hence, the project acts as a connecting axis that complements the existing market axis, yet forms an identity of its own through its architecture and related functions. To create such connection, three main paths from the city into the project were established and integrated: the historical river path, the old souk path, and the new market bridge path. Together with the project’s three buildings, one is taken through a journey from production to exhibition.
